CHAPTER 9
WAGING WAR WITH PROPHETIC WORDS
THE BODY OF Christ is in a season of war. As I said at the outset of this book, we have moved from peacetime Christianity to wartime Christianity in these last days. Of course, this war is not new, and the battle is the Lord’s (2 Chron. 20:15). But we are His war clubs (Jer. 51:20), and He reveals His battle plans to us through prophetic words. In fact, true prophecies are a sword of the Spirit that can cut through enemy opposition in our lives, our families, our cities, and our nations.
I am a big proponent of pressing into the Holy Spirit for battle plans. While spiritual warfare scriptures—like putting on the whole armor of God (Eph. 6) or casting down imaginations (2 Cor. 10:5)—are always true all the time, I believe certain weapons and certain strategies are most appropriate at certain times.
For example, God once told Joshua to have men of fighting age march around the city once a day for six days, then march around the city seven times on the seventh day with the priests blowing the trumpets, and then let out a battle cry on the last long blast (Josh. 6). That strategy brought the walls of Jericho tumbling down, but it is not the right strategy for every battle.
Indeed, we see many warfare strategies in Scripture. The key is to discern and execute the warfare strategy God is breathing on during any given season and for specific situations. In this season I believe there is Holy Spirit wind on a strategy Paul gave his spiritual son Timothy: “This command I commit to you, my son Timothy, according to the prophecies that were previously given to you, that by them you might fight a good fight” (1 Tim. 1:18).
UNDERSTANDING THE PURPOSE OF PROPHETIC WORDS
Let me step back a moment and offer some basics on personal prophetic words. In its simplest terms a prophecy is a promise from God. A prophecy expresses the desire and will of God over a person, place, or situation. Some prophecies are unconditional—the end-times prophecies will come to pass no matter what we do or don’t do. But some prophecies are conditional; for these, God is willing to do His part, but we have to do our part.
Most personal prophecy is conditional. We have to cooperate with God to see His will come to pass. For example, if God calls you as a missionary to China, you need to prepare your heart through prayer, but you also need to do some practical things, such as get a passport, learn the Chinese language, and study the culture. If He has called you to start a business, you need to make a business plan, perhaps get a business license, and probably raise funding. Prayer is vital, but faith without works is dead (James 2:17).
Praying out the prophecies you have received is a keen strategy from the Bible, but you should not start praying out prophecies that have not first been judged.
